Two young peregrine falcons will soon take their first step off the ledge (only one shown here). They are 16 stories above busy downtown Denver streets. To keep them safe, we want to provide them with help–people who will watch them to make sure they land safely. If they land in the busy streets around their office-building eyrie (nest) we will escort them to safety. If an injury should occur, we will provide them with the best avian veterinary care available, 24/7.
We need your help. The expenses and time involved include weeks of monitoring where the peregrines are nesting, how many chicks have hatched, what stage of development they are in, etc. It takes a lot of different groups of people to make sure Denver’s peregrine falcons have a sustainable experience. If they do, when the parents return next year to do it all over again, we will be ready to welcome them back.
Equipment: binoculars and radios for each team of monitors (8 per shift for 24/7 coverage); Safety vests and identifying T-shirts; High resolution building camera to monitor nesting area via a live stream.
Services: Veterinary care to include any testing, imaging, and medicine required; IT services for hosting live camera monitoring and streaming; videography and editing (as seen in current video documentation); coordinating groundcrew shifts to assure 24/7 coverage and associated expenses.
Review: Wrapping up a successful nesting season for Denver’s first documented peregrine falcons; reviewing videos, assembling observations of monitors, preparing for next year.
Goal: $25,000
If you or your company would like to support Denver’s peregrine family as a Peregrine Patron please email Peter Reshetniak at: PR@usaref.org or call 303-898-4295.
All contributors will be listed on our dedicated website pages. At levels of support of $1000 or more, your name will be added to all videos as a supporting sponsor. If you would like to host a high-rise peregrine party, we can bring REF’s male peregrine falcon for a meet-and -greet with the world’s fastest avian predator.
All expenses up until now have been borne by Raptor Education Foundation and Unico Properties LLC. No government funds are involved.
Sustainability is not a set of ideas; it is a set of actions. With your help we will continue to protect and celebrate peregrine falcons thriving in our Mile High City.
