SUMMARY:Birds of Prey Ski Championships
DESCRIPTION:We are SO excited to announce that we will be returning to Beaver Creek this year\, for resumption of the Men’s World Cup Alpine Ski Races! The event was held in Europe last year due to Covid\, and everyone involved in this huge effort is excited to gather again and witness the very finest downhill ski racers from around the world compete on the Birds of Prey course. \n  \nBut as the photo above reminds us\, we have one member of our team that won’t be around this year. We lost Blondie on April 18th\, and her passing has left an indescribable void in our lives\, both personal and professional. However\, we are so grateful to the Vail Valley Foundation who are going to be doing a video tribute to Blondie on Friday\, December 3rd\, in advance of the first day of Super G competition. After much discussion with the race organizers\, all while taking new Covid protocols into account\, we’ll be bringing our six-year old female bald eagle to the event. Even though she’s larger by weight and wingspan than Blondie was in her later years\, she still has some big talons to fill. It goes without saying that “the world” loved Blondie; the top athletes from countries like Austria\, Norway and Italy all can claim the golden eagle as a resident. But the races begin each day with the playing of the Star Spangled Banner…Anne is pumping iron and cannot wait to show off our national symbol to the world! DESCRIPTION:Enjoy meeting a live peregrine falcon and golden eagle 2001 in the Museum’s wildlife halls with Anne Price\, curator at the Raptor Education Foundation and an avid falconer since age 16. Price will also feature her new publication The Raptors of North America: A Coloring Book of Eagles\, Hawks\, Falcons\, and Owls. The book has activities\, coloring exercises\, and short essays describing a variety of raptors\, and is illustrated by Donald Malick. After the demonstration\, René O’Connell\, image archivist\, will detail the Museum’s collection of Malick’s artwork and his time as a field artist in Botswana. A reception with a display of Malick’s paintings and a chance to color in Botswana Hall follows the program.

DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Saturday\, September 21st\, for “Masters of the Colorado Sky”\, our newest raptor identification course. CPW Raptor Monitor Karen Metz and Curator Anne Price will showcase approximately ten of Colorado’s most common diurnal raptors live in our classroom\, with slides of other similar species for comparison. There will be special emphasis on the wing shape\, flight style\, and distinct markings of each genus or “type” of raptor that we commonly see here in Colorado. The approximately two-and-a-half hour class will conclude with a tour of our exterior mews (raptor housing). Space is limited to twenty participants. The fall migration will be well under way by September\, so you won’t want to miss this great opportunity to sharpen your raptor ID skills!  Early bird special is $50\, which expires the last day of July. August 1\, the price is $60.

SUMMARY:Birds of Prey World Ski Championships
DESCRIPTION:Once again\, we will be meeting local and international ski champions during the annual championship races held at Beaver Creek\, Colorado.  One of the most demanding ski courses in the world\, Birds of Prey\,  has various parts of the course named after certain eagles\, hawks\, owls\, and falcons.  We will be putting  real feathers and flesh to those names as our birds will be part of the opening and awards ceremonies\, as well as featured in the village area for guests to visit with up close.  Raptor Education Foundation has been part of the Birds of Prey races since the course opened in 1997. Our 37 year old golden eagle will once again\, be part of the festivities in the Red-tail Camp.

DESCRIPTION:SOLD OUT–On Saturday\, September 22\, the Raptor Education Foundation will present “Hawks”\, a new identification class designed to allow participants to easily distinguish a hawk from other birds\, and from other kinds of raptors. REF’s live raptors will be featured\, coupled with the combined skill and experience of Colorado Parks & Wildlife Raptor Monitor Karen Metz and Anne Price\, REF’s Curator of Raptors. Karen has decades of experience observing wild raptors\, and her exceptional knowledge is backed by carefully-selected slides provided by some of the best raptor photographers in the world. Did you know that we actually have eight different species of hawks here in Colorado? Come learn how to easily ID them\, when each species is here\, and how to tell them from a falcon\, eagle\, etc. \nThe class will be held at our facility in Brighton on Saturday\, September 22 from 9:30 AM to 12:00 Noon with a tour of our exterior mews (raptor housing) to conclude the class. Space is limited to 20 people\, by advance reservation only. \nREFUND Policy-Full refunds up to September 10\, 2018. 50% refunds until September 15th. No refunds after September 15th. Once we receive your payment we will send you a confirmation and further information.
